POSITION OVERVIEW
St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church is seeking a Pianist/Organist to provide instrumental music for worship services and serve as accompanist for our church choir. This is a part-time, salaried position averaging 10 hours per week annually. The Pianist/Organist reports to the Music Director with accountability to the Lead Pastor/Head of Staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide piano and/or organ music for all Sunday morning worship services throughout the year
  • Accompany the church choir during Sunday worship services and weekly rehearsals during the program year (approximately September through May)
  • Provide music for special services including Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve
  • Perform at weddings requiring piano or organ accompaniment; coordinate with pastoral staff and couples to plan music selections; attend wedding rehearsals
  • Provide music for funerals and memorial services as requested • Work collaboratively with the Music Director to plan and coordinate worship music
  • Partner with other musicians as directed by the Music Director
  • Monitor the condition of church piano and organ; report maintenance needs to the Music Director and Lead Pastor

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years of experience in piano and organ performance
  • Proven experience as an accompanist, particularly in choral settings
  • Strong knowledge of church music and the Protestant worship tradition
  • Proficiency in both piano and organ • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail
  • Collaborative mindset with ability to work effectively with clergy, staff, and volunteers
  • Flexibility and adaptability in diverse worship settings
  • Positive, encouraging attitude
  • Ability to pass a background check and obtain a fingerprint card

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Background in liturgical music and sacred repertoire
  • Experience coordinating music for worship services
  • Professional relationships within the wider music community to facilitate substitute coverage when needed

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Salary range: $13,000 – $15,000 annually, commensurate with experience
  • Two weeks paid vacation annually (summer months preferred)
  • Paid sick leave (1 hour accrued per 30 hours worked, up to 40 hours per year)
  • Additional compensation for weddings performed beyond regular duties

Organist/Pianist Position

Grace St. Paul’s Episcopal Church seeks an organist/pianist to collaborate with the Music Director at weekly rehearsals and to play for weekly Sunday services at 7:45 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and for all major services throughout the liturgical calendar. Applicants should have experience as a church musician, excellent sight-reading skills, and competence in a wide range of styles and musical cultures. Applicants also possessing skills on the harpsichord would be a plus but not essential. The church has a Baldwin grand piano, two Kawai uprights, and a French double manual harpsichord. Our 1996 pipe organ is a 59-rank, 3-manual instrument in the American Classic tradition. One of the largest in Southern Arizona (Op. 4 by Pipe Organ Artisans of Arizona), it is completely versatile and capable of any musical style. The sanctuary features warm, live acoustics, and is one of the most popular local concert venues, favored by a half-dozen municipal and professional musical groups, University of Arizona students, and several concert series. Position Description

Title: Organist/Pianist

Position Description: Organist/pianist to work in conjunction with the Director of Music (DOM) to enrich and enliven congregational worship through music. This is a quarter-time exempt staff position.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in keyboard studies or equivalent
  • Competence on pipe organ and piano
  • Competence on Finale or similar music notation program
  • Excellent sight-reading skills, including the ability to read open score choral parts
  • Ability to accompany vocal or instrumental soloists and various sizes of ensembles, choral or otherwise
  • Stylistic flexibility with particular emphasis on Latino and gospel styles in addition to wide ranging knowledge of various classical styles, blues and contemporary genres

Duties:

  • Meets weekly with DOM to review musical needs prior to rehearsal.
  • Selects, practices, and learns prelude and postlude or other solo keyboard works based upon the Episcopal lectionary and such texts as may be selected by the Rector, determining organ registrations if required and setting them up on the console.
  • Selects, plans, and practices hymn accompaniments and appropriate settings for service music.
  • Learns and adapts choral accompaniments for whichever keyboard instrument is the most effective.
  • Sets hymns in Finale or a similar music notation program as needed for publication in the weekly church bulletin.
  • Plays for choir rehearsals (currently on Thursday evening at 7:30 – 9:00 p.m., or 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. during Advent and Lent), warm-up rehearsals at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings before the 10:00 a.m. service, or at any time as needed before services of the church year.
  • Rehearses with soloists at a convenient time as needed.
  • Plays for Sunday services at 7:45 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. and any services as required by the liturgical calendar, i.e., Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday Tenebrae, Easter Sunday (7:45 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.), or by the Rector. Music includes preludes commencing five minutes before the start of the service, hymns, service music as needed (currently Chant of Praise, Sequence, Offertory, Communion, Table Chant, and Sanctus), choir anthems, and postlude.
  • Plays for weddings and memorial services, to be compensated separately from regular salary.
  • Supervises maintenance of the organ and pianos and informs DOM of problems so that appropriate repairs may be arranged.
  • Obtains good substitutes for non-emergent absences and informs DOM and Rector in a timely way of same.
  • Maintains collegial relationships with Rector, DOM and other church staff and volunteers and is helpful and personable to members of the congregation.
